Intercultural Theatre Storytelling Laboratory About book presentations

The poet, the saint and the navigator: about book
presentations The pièce “The poet, the saint and the navigator” is
a kind of parody of the classical book presentation. Usually, using a theatrical
point of view, the scene is this: a library, a desk and chairs with some
unconscious actors, behind a very intellectual and concentrated public. My
critic and provocation towards this kind of time - let’s call it as a simple
moment - arise by its meaning: book presentation. If we are talking about
fiction, a novel presentation, a story presentation. Now, as a storyteller
and a reader, I recognize my difficulty but I can’t understand how is
possible to present a story. We write stories, we tell them, we perform them,
we also read them, but - my modest opinion - we can’t and we must not to
present them, to explain them, to demonstrate them, moreover to people who
don’t know them. I don’t think that mine is a very clever remark and,
for this reason, let’s reach the second but not less important motivation of
this kind of absurd happening: to promote the book, to make it known, to sell
the product, to obtain rich money proceeds, fundamental for all actors of
this comedy: the author, the publisher, the librarian, all unified in this
perverse necklace, all ecstatic when basis is a true bestseller. Now, I don’t want to express an hypocritical accuse
to commercial aspects of editorial system and I am on this page because I
strongly believe in this concept: the editorial system and the perverse
necklace, the authors too, nothing of this should be more important than the
only true protagonist, as the story is, which is more significant than the
book containing, if you permit. I think we all lose respect for stories. All becomes
more central than the story, the writer is largely more famous than his
books, the publisher is extremely more distinguished than his authors and who
is fired on The Big Brother this week overcomes everything in a spot time. For this reasons, the novel “The poet,
the saint and the navigator” won’t be presented, but will be donated to the
public of a theatre performance, that was born from the story inside. And if
the pièce is a parody of a book presentation, maybe, it is not casual. Last update: 2006-12-15 Email: sannigheb@tiscali.it |
