I was born in Naples in 1968, to an Eritrean father and an Italian mother. Ever since, I have spent my life trying to understand — and sometimes simply survive — what it means to be perceived by others as something that does not fit easily into the categories available to them.

Between Two Souths tells this story across five decades of my life: childhood, school, adolescence, adulthood, and my journey as a writer and storyteller, alongside the encounters and experiences that have shaped my relationship with a society in which our origins still influence the way people are seen, defined and treated.

Growing up Black in Italy, as the son of an Eritrean father and an Italian mother, can mean finding yourself in a difficult place to name. Too Black for some, not Black enough for others. Italian, yet repeatedly asked to explain why. Part of a history that is not always acknowledged, while at the same time living with the consequences of that history in the present.

From Naples to Rome, from childhood to adulthood, Between Two Souths follows a life lived between identities, belongings and other people's perceptions. But it is also about something more universal: the need to be recognized for who we are, rather than reduced to what others have already decided we should be.

This is a book about race, but also about family. About racism, but also about love, friendship, work, memory and the possibility of telling one's own story. A personal memoir intertwined with the social and cultural history of Italy over the past five decades.

Above all, Between Two Souths is the story of a man who has spent a lifetime between two Souths: between two origins, two ways of being perceived, and two places that others might expect him to belong to — while searching for a space in which he does not have to choose.

Il mio primo libro scritto in inglese e pubblicato da un editore anglofono non italiano.

Sono nato a Napoli nel 1968, da padre eritreo e madre italiana. Da allora ho trascorso la mia vita cercando di capire — e qualche volta semplicemente di sopravvivere al fatto — che cosa significhi essere percepiti dagli altri come qualcosa che non rientra facilmente nelle categorie disponibili.

Between Two Souths racconta questa storia attraverso cinque decenni della mia vita: l'infanzia, la scuola, l'adolescenza, l'età adulta e il mio percorso come scrittore e narratore, insieme agli incontri e alle esperienze che hanno costruito il mio rapporto con una società nella quale le nostre origini continuano a influenzare il modo in cui le persone vengono guardate, definite e trattate.

Crescere da persona nera in Italia, figlio di un padre eritreo e di una madre italiana, può significare trovarsi in un luogo difficile da nominare. Troppo nero per alcuni, non abbastanza nero per altri. Italiano, eppure continuamente chiamato a spiegare perché. Parte di una storia che non sempre viene riconosciuta e, allo stesso tempo, testimone delle conseguenze che quella storia continua ad avere nel presente.

Da Napoli a Roma, dall'infanzia all'età adulta, Between Two Souths segue una vita vissuta tra identità, appartenenze e sguardi altrui. Ma racconta anche qualcosa di più universale: il bisogno di essere riconosciuti per ciò che siamo, invece di essere ridotti a ciò che gli altri hanno già deciso che dovremmo essere.

È un libro sulle origini, ma anche sulla famiglia. Sul razzismo, ma anche sull'amore, sull'amicizia, sul lavoro, sulla memoria e sulla possibilità di raccontare la propria storia. Un memoir personale che si intreccia con la storia sociale e culturale dell'Italia degli ultimi cinquant'anni.

Soprattutto, Between Two Souths è la storia di un uomo che ha trascorso una vita between two Souths: tra due origini, tra due modi di essere percepito, tra due luoghi ai quali gli altri potrebbero aspettarsi che appartenga — cercando uno spazio nel quale non sia necessario scegliere.
